    A Family Farm Legacy Built to Last

    They say in Iowa, “If you build it, they will come.”

    That’s exactly what happened in 2004. Someone commented to Dave Erger from Brandon, Iowa, that it must take a really big frying pan to feed the entire town during its annual Cowboy Breakfast Festival. So a pan was built and now hundreds of tourists annually make a roadside stop for a photo opportunity.

    “My dad, along with several other local farmers, met in Dad’s shop,” says Andy, who is the fourth generation to own and operate his family’s farm in eastern Iowa. “It was supposed to be more of a joke, but before they knew it, it had become a pretty big deal.” Iowa’s largest frying pan is an impressive nine feet wide and 14 feet long, including the handle. The skillet could fry 44 dozen eggs or 88 pounds of bacon.

    Farmers are known for rising to any challenge, whether it’s fabricating a giant frying pan or surviving a global pandemic. Unfortunately, Dave Erger faced a health challenge in 2014 that became life changing. He suffered a heart attack that resulted from Lupus, an autoimmune disease that causes one’s body to attack itself. Lupus has made farming more difficult for Dave. As a result, Andy has accepted more responsibility in recent years. That’s why in the spring of 2021 Dave and his wife, Teresa Erger, approached Andy and his wife, Jamee, about purchasing the farm.

    “Jamee and I have spent countless hours crunching numbers. We met with our bankers, FSA consultants, and tax advisors. We were relieved when we received confirmation in April that our loans had been approved,” says Andy. “Keeping my family farm running and thriving has always been a dream of mine. I get to share my dream with my wife and our children.”

    Andy and Jamee are the proud parents of four daughters and one son: Kayleigh, Amiliah, Davennah and Rosaleigh and Gilbert (Gib), who was named after Andy’s great grandfather.

    With Andy taking on more of the farming responsibilities in addition to his custom hay baling business, Jamee is learning all the ropes of becoming primarily responsible for their Latham® seed dealership, Erger Seeds. Andy became a Latham® Seeds dealer in 2014 because he knew the extra income would help support his family.

    “Latham products have worked great on our farm, so I wanted to share it with others around me,” says Andy. “Our dealership also has provided opportunities to create new friendships.”

    Andy and Jamee are very much business partners. In addition to helping Andy with the farm and seed dealership, Jamee runs a Revital U business and helps their daughters with an egg business.

    “Our home-based businesses allow us to show our kids how the world works and how much work it takes to be successful in the things you care about,” says Jamee. “Having chickens has helped teach the girls responsibility by managing money and taking care of animals. They also help care for three horses, many cats and dogs.”

    The Erger family in spring 2021 started a Labrador Retriever breeding business called North of the River Family Labs. Their dogs are fully AKC registered, Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) certified, and Embark genetic tested.

    They work and play hard, too. They make time for family fun like boating, camping, horseback riding, four-wheeling, visiting parks or zoos or roasting s’mores over a bonfire. The Erger family also makes time to exercise together.

    “It’s good to teach our kids about self care,” says Jamee, who like her mother-in-law, is committed to exercise and eating a balanced diet.

    “We only get one life to live, so we want to make sure we live it to its fullest,” says Andy. “We love the life of farming and we always put our full attention to anything we care about whether it’s taking care of our family, farm, pets or seed customers. We understand the blood, sweat and tears that are shed by generations of family farms, so we want to help our customers and neighbors be successful.

    Andy adds, “It’s nice to be part of a family-owned seed company that was founded in Iowa. The Lathams strive to treat their dealers like family, and in turn, we strive to treat our farmer-customers like family.”

    One way they show their customers how much they appreciate them is by delivering homemade cookies and bars during the spring planting and fall harvest seasons. Jamee also enjoys taking meals to the fields for her family during baling hay, and harvest.

    “I feed em’ and leave em’,” says Jamee. “It’s important to me to make sure that the guys get a decent meal to help keep them going.”

    Schminke Family “Goes the Distance” to Support Childhood Cancer

    Many Midwest farmers will be harvesting crops on Oct. 10, 2021, but Kyle and Sarah Schminke of Shellsburg, Iowa, will be running in the 43rd Chicago Marathon. Their goal is to raise awareness about childhood cancer, as well as money for the University of Iowa Dance Marathon. Training is already underway for this father-daughter team, and we’re inviting you to cheer on this Eastern Iowa Latham® dealer.

    “I knew I wanted to get involved on campus, and I had seen some of my older friends post about the University of Iowa Dance Marathon,” says Sarah, who will begin her junior year this fall at the University of Iowa, majoring in Communications Studies with a minor in Rhetoric and Persuasion. She also is earning an event management certificate.

    While many people wouldn’t look forward to running a marathon let alone paying a $1,250 entry fee to serve as a charity runner, the Schminkes are looking forward to running this together.

    “It’s important to Sarah, so it’s important to me,” says Kyle, who farms with Sarah at his side. His wife, Kyla, works at the local family practice clinic in Shellsburg. His oldest daughter, Dawne, works for UnityPoint pediatrics as a patient service representative.

    “Older people are sometimes critical of the younger generation, but just look at the passion the students like Sarah have for Dance Marathon!” adds Kyle. “When you do selfless acts, you feel better. It motivates you. Sarah understands she has a pretty good life, and we should be thankful for what we have. I’m so impressed by the selflessness, and I’m so excited for Sarah to be doing this.”

    This father-daughter team has a goal of finishing the race and raising awareness. They’re confident they can, and they will! Kyle completed Iron Man competitions in 2015 and 2016. Sarah ran track and cross country but tore her ACL during her senior year of high school. She wears a brace when she runs, but she isn’t complaining because many people have it so much worse.

    “I’m not running for me. This is for those kids,” says Sarah. “I don’t care about how much pain I’m in. I’m running for the kids who can’t.”

    Kyle and Sarah will be running with a list of 26 names on their arms of children for whom they are running. These are called their “mile motivators.” Sarah knows looking down at the names on her arm will be the motivation she needs to keep running and finish strong.

    The University of Iowa Dance Marathon (UIDM) is the university’s largest student-run organization and the third largest Children’s Miracle Network Dance Marathon of more than 300 such organizations across the United States. It is a year-long endeavor that includes monthly events, including events for families with children fighting childhood cancer, fundraising events and dancer events. Everything leads up to The Big Event, which is held annually in February.

    During The Big Event, students raise money by dancing for 24 straight hours. Dance Marathon families share inspiring stories about children who have battled cancer and won, explains Sarah. Kids who lost their courageous battle are remembered Dancing in Our Hearts.

    “During The Big Event my freshman year, I remember texting my mom, ‘My feet hurt so bad. Why am I doing this?’ My mom replied, ‘You only have 24 hours of pain, but those kids may have a lifetime of pain. There is a reason to everything you’re doing.’ That’s the motivation I needed to keep going that night and to remain involved in this event. I want to do what I can to help families affected by childhood cancer.”

    The 2021 Big Event, which was held virtually, raised $1.4 million for kids and families. While that is certainly a sizable amount of money, it is much lower than the amount the University of Iowa Dance Marathon has raised annually in recent years. The UIDM raised $2 million in 2015 and $3 million in 2018.

    The UIDM has pledged $5 million to the 11th floor of the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital that was named the University of Iowa Dance Marathon Pediatric Cancer Center. (The 11th floor is the one that gets “the wave” during University of Iowa home football games.) This student-run organization also has pledged $2 million to establish the University of Iowa Dance Marathon Chair in Pediatric Oncology, Clinical and translational Research. In addition, UIDM gives $5,000 to each family who loses a child to cancer to help cover funeral expenses.

    “The more I learned about Dance Marathon, the more I fell in love with this organization,” says Sarah, who raised more than $500 as a dancer during her first event in 2020. She served on the Public Relations Committee for the 2021 year and raised more than $4,000. Sarah was selected to serve as Director of Public Relations for the 2022 Big Event. Her goal is to raise more than $4,000 again this year.

    Tips for Celebrating June Dairy Month at Home and on the Road

    They say if March comes in like a lion, it goes out like a lamb. What do they say when the first 11 days of June brings daily temperatures that are nearly 20 degrees hotter than the average? We say, “Hit the road!”

    In celebration of June Dairy Month, Val Plagge and her family take weekly Iowa Ice Cream Road Trips.

    “I am an ice cream lover. When I was in high school, my family would make an annual trip to the Whippy Dip in Decorah, Iowa,” says Val Plagge, who farms with her husband, Ian, near Latimer in North Iowa. She also blogs at Corn, Beans, Pigs and Kids. “The Whippy Dip started my love for small town, ice cream shops. I had an idea to discover more great local ice cream shops during June Dairy Month, and it’s been an annual tradition for me and Ian since 2014. Now our four kids have fun traveling across the state and visiting new places.”

    The Plagge family chooses what ice cream shops to visit based on recommendations from blogs and social media followers.

    “We have a running list of more than 50 places we want to try,” says Val. “Each week we look at our family’s schedule and decide which day will be ‘ice cream day.’ Then we pick our destination based on the amount of time we have available to travel.”

    They kicked off their 2021 Ice Cream Road Trip with a stop that is close to their home, as well as close to the home of Latham Hi‑Tech Seeds. Casa Chameleon, LLC in Belmond, Iowa, is a seasonal ice cream shop and pizza place.

    “The kids loved the combo, and we all wondered why we hadn’t come over for pizza and ice cream before!” says Val. “Casa Chameleon is known for having a big variety of ice cream flavors. When we went, they had 45 to choose from! Watching them make the ice cream was just as much of a treat as eating the ice cream. They take vanilla soft serve ice cream, mix in your flavor preference and then they put the mixture into another part of the machine to twist out and serve. We loved all their unique flavors including German Chocolate and Tutti Frutti.”

    The Plagges visit a different ice cream shop each week during the month of June. Then on the first of July every year, Val updates her Ice Cream Road Trip blog post. Her post coincides with the start of National Ice Cream Month.

    Cinnamon Ridge Dairy Gives Farm Guests a Seat at the Table

    When people eat, they want to feel connected to their food.

    This simple premise is what prompted fifth-generation, Iowa farmer John Maxwell to open the doors to Cinnamon Ridge Dairy. He began offering farm tours in 1997 when John Deere heard he had won the National Outstanding Young Farmer Award.

    “I’m not afraid to take a risk,” said Maxwell in a 2013 Agri-View article, who took a risk by opening his working farm to the Deere tours. He expanded from there, providing educational tours as requested for guests hosted by other agribusinesses. He also since branched out by working with foreign tour and travel companies, including American Queen River boats and Viking River Boats.

    Nestled in the rolling hills of Scott County, the farm’s proximity to the Mississippi River provides a convenient location for many tour groups. John and Joan Maxwell are gracious tour guides with a great story to tell. Their modern farm is committed to sustainability, and its picturesque landscape is second to none.

    “The Mississippi River used to flow a mile north of here,” explained John during my recent visit to his beautiful farm. “The glacier choked off the river and crested the ridge. I named my farm for this ridge and the cinnamon-colored cows we raise.”

    The Maxwells milk on average 220 purebred, registered Jerseys using four Lely robotic milkers. John’s daughter, Amy Maxwell, began managing the family’s dairy operation in 2011 after she graduated from Iowa State University. Through the years, Amy has developed other production and genetic leaders that have earned several awards including the 2018 Hilmar Cheese Yield Trophy, 2018 President’s Trophy and the 2011 National Jersey Youth Production Contest.

    One way the Maxwells easily track lineage is by using a unique nomenclature to denote a family of cows. For example, “Cheddar” is from the cheese family. She is one of Cinnamon Ridge’s top cows based off of DHIA records. Offspring in her family have names like Brie and Gouda.

    Amy purchased her first heifer at age 9 from the Pot O’Gold Sale. Numerous descendants from that heifer remain in the herd today, including Cinnamon Nitro Noble-ET, Excellent-90% (a.k.a. “Noble”) who set the nation’s top 305-day milk record for 2020. Also in 2020, Cinnamon Ridge Dairy was named the nation’s top herd for milk and protein production on both an actual and m.e. basis for the second consecutive year. Due to their high-quality milk and their success in the show ring, older cows from Cinnamon Ridge Dairy are sold for their genetics.

    Farm guests can get a picture of success. An upper-level conference room featuring large picture windows overlooks the free-stall barn, so farm guests have a bird’s eye view of contented cows. Cows can choose to have their back scratched by Luna brushes, get milked, or lounge around on beds of soft sand.

    “We like to see one-third of our cows eating, one-third standing and one-third lounging,” explains Joan Maxwell, who married John in 2013. An RFID tag on each cow’s neck records milk output, as well as temperature and 122 data points, which Amy studies to monitor herd health.

    Farm-to-Table Meals and Market

    When he saw farm visitors peering inside his kitchen windows, John decided to start offering farm-to-table meals in addition to barn and farm tours. Guests dine on farm-raised foods like steaks, grilled pork chops, burgers and shredded beef, as well as homemade bread and baked goods.

    Providing homecooked meals for bus tours of 50 people takes a lot of time. John wants to create a family atmosphere, as well as practice sustainability, so he serves guests using real plates and silverware. To provide this high level of service, he hired part-time help to prepare and serve the meal. These ladies also bake the delectable, signature cinnamon rolls that sell out as quickly as they hit the on-farm store’s shelves. Fresh baked rolls, cookies, bars and quick breads are stocked at Cinnamon Ridge Dairy’s roadside stand by 6 P.M. on Thursdays.

    This retail store, aptly named the Country Cupboard, opened in 2007 because farm visitors were interested in purchasing products after they toured the barn and farm. This self-serve store sells a variety of products from Cinnamon Ridge Farms: eggs, beef, pork, artisan cheese, cheese curds, meat sticks, canned jellies, local honey, and homemade baked goods.

    Providing guests with a wonderful experience is top priority for John and Joan. They know the food they serve and sell, the appearance of their farm, and their hospitality all factor into a great customer experience. Handouts and dairy recipes are available inside the dairy barn and conference room.

    A Note to Farmers from Secretary Naig to close out National Ag Week

    Happy National Ag Week! This annual event is a great opportunity to say thank you to the farmers and agribusinesses who provide food and fuel for all of us. This past year reminded everyone what we, in agriculture, already know. Agriculture is essential to our livelihood, our food chain and our state’s economy.

    My roots are in agriculture. I was born and raised on a crop and livestock farm in Cylinder, Iowa. The agriculture community shaped who I am and I still plant and harvest our family farm every year. But nothing makes me more proud than taking my wife and three boys to the family farm to teach them about agriculture and caring for our land. Latham Seeds celebrates food and family every Friday on this blog, The Field Position so I’m sharing the below recipe for Kringla, a favorite treat in my family.

    During the past few days of National Ag Week I’ve been visiting farmers, agribusinesses and food security organizations across the state to say “thank you” for your contributions. This past year was not easy, but it highlighted the creativity, resilience and generosity of Iowa’s agriculture community.

    Beef Up Iowa Donation ISU Meats Lab

    There are two very special organizations I’d like to recognize this week — the Iowa State University Meats Lab and the Iowa Food Bank Association. These organizations went to extraordinary efforts to help livestock producers overcome supply chain disruptions and feed hungry Iowans during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a thank you, it’s my pleasure to present the Secretary’s Ag Leader Awards to both of these organizations.

    The ISU Meats Lab, and the Iowa Food Bank Association and its six regional food banks, played vital roles in the state’s food security initiatives, including Pass the Pork, Beef Up Iowa, Pack the Pantry and Turkey to Table. These programs were developed by the Governor’s Feeding Iowans Task Force in the spring of 2020, in part, to help livestock producers market their protein when the COVID-19 pandemic reduced meat processing capacity at the state’s large processing facilities. Through these programs, 1.75 million servings of Iowa-raised pork, beef and turkey were delivered to the food bank and food pantry feeding programs.

    I believe the Iowa agriculture community can continue leading important conversations and tackling difficult issues. Foreign animal disease prevention and planning, generating demand for renewable fuels, and scaling-up soil health and water quality projects continue to be my priorities.

    As we spend this week thanking the farmers who work tirelessly to feed and fuel us, we must also recognize their businesses must be financially and environmentally sustainable to continue doing so.

    That’s one reason why I’m working to establish a value-added agriculture grant program. If the funding is approved, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship will provide grants that incentivize producers to explore new product offerings, production methods and marketing opportunities to help them be more profitable.

    The Department is also investing in conservation programs that improve soil health and water quality, and we’re learning more about the new carbon markets. These market-based systems create revenue streams for farmers and landowners who invest in carbon-sequestration practices. This is one way farmers and landowners can build upon the conservation efforts underway across the state.

    These are just two examples of the programs designed to give the Iowa agriculture community the resources it needs to continue its legacy of innovation. I am confident that the creativity and resiliency that served agriculture well in the past, will continue to drive innovation, environmental stewardship and profitability into the next decade and beyond.

    HAVE A COKE AND A SMILE… AND A LIFETIME OF ZING

    “Things go better with Coke” was the 1960s marketing slogan of one of America’s oldest soft drinks, and college students nationwide put it to the test.

    Linda Laverty was a junior at Iowa State University when a friend set her up on a Coke date with Bill Latham, who was a senior majoring in Agronomy. While they had a nice time, the timing was not right.

    Coke ad 3.5.21 F & F FeatureBill soon graduated and took a job as a sales representative and agronomist in Louisiana. Later he was transferred to Nebraska and moved to Lincoln. Meanwhile, Linda graduated with her degree in Child Development and began teaching Head Start in West Des Moines. Then she followed her career to Omaha. Nebraska is where Bill and Linda’s paths crossed once again. As fate would have it, a high school friend of Linda’s married a fraternity brother of Bill’s and moved to Omaha. The young married couple reintroduced Bill and Linda.

    ZING! Just like the claims made in the 1960s Coke advertisements, Bill and Linda discovered that “be-alive sparkle” and were married in August 1967.

    Because Bill had moved home to North Central Iowa to join his parents in the family’s seed business, the newlyweds made their home in rural Franklin County. Then in 1973 Bill and Linda built a home right next door to the seed company’s headquarters.

    “It was so much more convenient to be close to the farm in the fall and spring when seed was coming in and going out to growers. Each day was exceptionally long, but the boys looked forward to getting  off the school bus and joining their grandpa and dad. Chris discovered his love for computers, and John developed a passion for seed products.”

    ALinda Latham 3nother advantage of living next to seed farm is that cousins lived nearby. Three of the five Latham brothers were involved in the seed business, and each one lived within two miles of the seed company. John and Chris each had a cousin the same age, so they were the best of friends and shared many similar experiences.

    After John graduated from high school, he followed in his father’s footsteps by enrolling in the College of Agriculture at ISU and pledging Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. Chris also made his way south after high school and graduated from Drake University in Finance. The two brothers worked for other companies before working together in the startup Latham Hi‑Tech Hybrids. Today they and John’s wife, Shannon, are proud to be the third generation to own and operate Latham Seeds.

    “I know Bill would be very proud of what John and Chris have done in the seed business,” says Linda. “I also am proud of them as they are following a deep legacy. Their grandparents, father and uncles all involved and known in the seed business. I believe by living close to the business they learned about the responsibilities of operating a business, and they developed leadership skills.”

    Bill served as president of the Iowa Seed Association (ISA), the Independent Professional Seed Association (IPSA) and the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA). Now John is president of ASTA. Chris recently finished his term as ISA president and recently started serving on the IPSA board.

    “When the boys were growing up, they attended a lot of industry meetings with us,” says Linda. “Our family vacations were usually centered around one of the meetings as they were held across the United States. We became friends with people all over the world through our involvement in these seed meetings.”

    One of the best experiences Linda said they had was in 1997-1998 when Bill served as ASTA president. He and Linda spent the year working with the president of the Canadian Seed Trade Association and his wife as they hosted a joint convention in Toronto.

    “That year of working with Canadians and Americans to plan a convention for more than 1,000 attendees was a big highlight!” says Linda. “We traveled so much that year and attended the Federation of International Seed Association convention in Monte Carlo. We also were able to attend the Southeast Asian Seedsman meeting in Brisbane, Australia. Bill attended meetings while I got to see and pet koala bears and kangaroos.”

    Another highlight was in 1999 when Bill and Linda served as ASTA convention chairs in Lake Las Vegas. One of the keynote speakers was Dr.

    Norman Borlaug. A native of Cresco in Northeast Iowa, Dr. Borlaug became known as the Father of the Green Revolution and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970.

    “Dr. Borlaug arrived at the hotel on Sunday afternoon with a friend who had just won the World Food Prize. Bill and I visited with them in the hotel lounge. Norman ordered a rum and Coke. Shortly thereafter, Bill thought they should register for the convention. Bill left with Dr. Borlaug’s aid, leaving me at the table with the guest of honor. I was a little panic-stricken for a moment. After all, I’m not a scientist! What could I possibly have in common with Dr. Borlaug? It turned out that he was very easy to talk with. Because he was born and raised on a farm in Iowa like I was, we visited about his childhood. He was genuinely nice. I felt like I was talking to my grandpa as Dr. Borlaug was in his 90’s then.”

    Today Linda enjoys reliving many of her favorite life experiences through her sons. She looks forward to traveling to Ireland in July 2021 on a Latham® Dealer trip. Linda’s ancestors moved from Northern Ireland to Jasper County in Central Iowa, so she looks forward to sharing her ancestry with her grandkids. Linda also enjoys attending her five grandchildren’s many activities plus attending Iowa State Cyclones football and basketball games. Her grandchildren range from 4th grade to college, but they have a love for chocolate cake in common.

    “A Charlie Brown Christmas” Celebrates 55 Years

    As a young child, I always looked forward to the annual showing of animated classics like “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and “A Charlie Brown Christmas” by Charles M. Schulz. My mom would read “TV Guide” and note when each special would air since “movies on demand” didn’t exist at the time. No wonder these specials were so special!

    The Peanuts gang made its debut 55 years ago on Dec. 9, 1965. Schulz had to work hard to convince network executives at CBS, the special’s original network, that they should use actual children to voice the young characters.  He believed the audience would respond to the special’s message about the true meaning of Christmas, and although they were concerned, CBS executives finally agreed and aired it as the creator wanted it.

    Charlie Brown Chirstmas TreeThe response to that network debut was even better than anticipated, and through the years, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” has received both Emmy and a Peabody Awards. To commemorate its 50th anniversary in 2020, the network aired the movie only for one night.     I love “A Charlie Brown Christmas” so much that I even purchased a Charlie Brown Christmas tree for my son to use as a night light when he was a child. Although she is now a young adult, my daughter still looks forward to decorating her own tree for the holiday season and sleeping as it glows throughout the night. I got the idea for the Christmas tree night lights by reading the “ADVENTure of CHRISTmas” by Lisa Welchel. (Some of you may remember her as Blair on “The Facts of Life.” Oh, how I loved watching that sit com when I was growing up!) This book is filled with many great ideas on how to celebrate true meaning throughout the season.

    In honor of the Peanuts Gang’s 55th anniversary, and in celebration of National Brownie Day on December 8, I’m sharing a recipe for Charlie’s Brownie Cupcakes that I got years ago from a lady in my church circle. How fun are personal-sized brownies?

    Winter break sounds like the perfect time to bake a batch or two of brownies. Just think of them topped with a small scoop of Blue Bunny® Peppermint Stick Ice Cream and homemade hot fudge sauce…

    Cue the “Linus and Lucy” theme song and dance around the kitchen as you bake this season!

    “Gotta love the spunk she has!” says Patty of the time her 91-year-old mother spent in the field during 2020 beet harvest. “I’m so glad she got to enjoy it with her David!”

    They had never planted Latham® Hi‑Tech Seeds but that didn’t prevent Mike and Patty Bergquist of Foxhome, Minnesota, from become a seed dealer when asked.

    “We were looking for a way to bring our son, David, home and this ‘solution’ seemed to present itself,” said Mike as he recalled that particular day in 2015. “You might say opportunity knocked when Latham’s regional sales manager came to our door and talked with us about Latham Seeds.”

    They weren’t able to get the soybean brand they were accustomed to planting, so the Bergquists decided to try Latham Hi‑Tech Soybeans. They also put Latham brand corn to the test, and it topped their on-farm yield test. They were sold on the Latham’s on-farm performance!

    No one else in their area had a Latham Seeds dealership, but national companies had several dealers in the area. Mike liked the idea of working with a family-owned company that shares his values of commitment to family and community.

    Mike served for three years in the U.S. Navy. He returned home to farm with his step-grandfather, Harold. To supplement his income, Mike started working campaigns in 1975 at the local sugar beet processing plant. He worked at the plant whenever Harold didn’t need him in the field.

    Mike and his wife, Patty, were married in 1977. Harold offered to let the newlyweds move a trailer house onto the farm. They appreciated living on the farm. Four years later their first child was born, and Mike had to choose between accepting a promotion at the beet plant or farming full time with Harold. He chose farming.

    Harold passed away in 1985. The 1980s Farm Crisis made it challenging for a young couple to support a growing family, so in 1988, this father of five went back to working campaigns at the beet plant. Mike accepted a full-time position there in 1989. He worked his way to plant supervisor and retired from Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative on June 3, 2019.

    Because Mike only got weekends off once every four years, it helped to have David involved with the farming operation. David, the Bergquist’s youngest child and only son, completed the John Deere program at North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) in Wahpeton. He worked full-time for four years at RDO Equipment as a John Deere technician while also helping his father farm. David was able to double his farming operation and started farming full-time in 2018. David married his high school sweetheart, Chloe. They’re the proud parents of two sons, Briar and Bowen. Chloe also works as a dental hygienist.

    The Berquist’s oldest daughter, Kari, and her husband, Tim Marquardt, live nearby in Rothsay with their three children: Hunter, 14; Hadley, 12; and Hudson, 9. Kari is a stay-at-home mom, and Tim works for Wilkens County. Mike and Patty’s second oldest, Heidi, works for Red River Human Services in Breckinridge where she lives with her three fur babies.

    Third in birth order is Katie. She is a daycare provider for her brother’s children. Her husband, Derrick, is an engineer for Willrich. They have three sons: Dawson, 9; Carsten, 6; and Grayson, 4 months.

    Their youngest daughter, Holly, was a nanny until her twins arrived. Her husband, Travis, is a John Deere technician in Wheaton and also farms. They are the parents of five boys: Michael, 10; Bennett, 6; Henry, 2; and 5-month old twins, Kamden and Cooper.

    “I love having our grandkids come to the farm,” says Patty, a proud grandmother of 12 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. “We hang out in the shop, go for Ranger rides, rock babies and read books. It’s so much fun to hear the laughter and to see smiles on the kids’ faces. We let them stay as often as they want now. We know that in a blink of an eye they will be too old. We hope they have good memories of staying with us.”

    The older grandkids are active in sports, so the Berquists enjoy attending their basketball, football and baseball games. In summer months, the Bergquist family enjoys camping together.

    “There is a lot of love when we all get together, and that’s the way we like it!” says Patty. “We’re making memories and more memories!”

    Today Patty is sharing with us one of her family’s favorite recipes for Buttermilk Blueberry Breakfast Casserole.

    15 Success Tips from an Iowa Veteran, Part II

    There were few things Ethan Dial cared about more than high school sports in the early 1990s. He also appreciated the patriotism around the Super Bowl and the American flag’s place of honor at other sporting events. It’s no wonder this Lake City, Iowa, farm kid committed to playing baseball for the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. He completed his West Point training in 1999.

    Although he retired after 20 years from full-time military service, Dial enjoys sharing the practical wisdom he gained through his military service, especially with new lieutenants during their commissioning ceremony.

    Dial’s 15 strategies for success can apply to any occupation:

    1. Participate in your own survival. Life is a contact sport. To succeed, you can’t sit on the sidelines. “You must roll up your sleeves, get your hands dirty and make it happen,” Dial said. “Be proactive, not reactive. Create the conditions for success in your position.”
    2. Embrace “more hands make light work.” You can’t shoulder the entire load all of the time. Help others, and ask others for help. “The Army is a team activity,” Dial said. “When you get every soldier in your platoon or section working in synch, the collective power of the team is amazing.” Also, don’t be afraid to dig in and get your hands dirty, no matter your role. “Soldiers will respect you when they see that nothing you ask them to do is beneath you, since you’re willing to get in there and work alongside them,” Dial said. “You’ll learn a ton doing it, too.”
    3. Remember “Horse – Saddle – Rider.” Be prepared. In the military, whether you’re returning from the range or a month-long field training exercise, your first priority should be the vehicle or aircraft you traveled in. Refuel it, clean it and prep it for the next mission—which might only be minutes away. Also, clean up your gear, refill your aid bags and top off your canteens. “Again, you’ll never know when you only have seconds to grab your gear, and you’ll be thankful your kit is ready to go,” Dial said. Take care of yourself last. Get cleaned up, fed, hydrated, lay out your clothes for the next day, then rest. Many of these same principals of preparation also apply if you’re running a business or a household. “The next mission will come sooner than you expect,” he added.
    4. Show up early. If you’re not 10 minutes early, you’re already 15 minutes late. Don’t forget the corollary that “being early is free, being late will cost you.” “Make being early a habit,” Dial said. Give yourself time to collect your thoughts, check and re-check important things and put out any last-minute fires. “If you’re at the right place, at the right time, in the right uniform, with the right attitude,” you’re definitely 99% on the road to success,” Dial said.

      Surround yourself with positive people. Seek people who challenge you to always improve. “You’ll be amazed by how much the people you chose to surround yourself with impact your physical, mental, spiritual, and social well-being,” Dial said. “Your attitude changes, your outlook improves, but most importantly, your outcomes start to match your expectations.” Positivity and an attitude of gratitude are contagious, he added.

    6. Adapt and overcome. As a leader, you’re going to be asked to make decisions and provide guidance. Don’t panic. “If no-one is bleeding and no bullets are firing, it probably isn’t a catastrophe,” Dial said. Take in all available information, evaluate possible tactics and think through potential responses to these tactics. Then make a decision and stick with it. “Be consistent, calm and confident,” Dial said. “Be the problem-solving, adaptable leader your team and your followers need you to be.”
    7. Develop your natural curiosity. Never accept the first report. Do your research. Ask questions to draw out the facts and separate out the drama. “Always be learning, always be inquisitive, strive to learn more and live a more thorough life,” Dial said.
    8. In the absence of orders – attack. Always be moving forward. Sometimes you’ll have to decide whether you’ll need to be an “ask for permission” leader or “beg for forgiveness” leader. “Once you make a decision, you own it, good or bad, right or wrong,” Dial said. Throughout your career, you’ll get better at decision making, he added. Read about other’s decision-making style. Study intuition and gut feelings. Practice your decision-making skills. “Don’t sit back and wait for a handout, email or text telling you what to do,” Dial said. “Listen early for intent and guidance, but in the absence of orders – attack!”
    9. Do you GAS (give a sh**)? Pay attention to the details, and most everything else will fall into place. Take the extra 5 minutes to straighten something, fix something and make it look professional. “If it looks good, it probably is,” Dial said.

      Show your loyalty. “What’s the best unit you’ve ever been in? The one you’re in at that moment,” Dial said. Demonstrate your loyalty to your organization. Wear your company’s logoed apparel, and attention the “optional” and “highly encouraged” functions. “It’s visible, it makes a difference, and it’s part of the small things that do not go unnoticed,” Dial said.

    11. Know it’s ok to say you don’t know. Even if you don’t know the answer, say so, but add, “I will find out.” Then follow up as soon as possible.
    12. Pick three to five things to focus on daily. You can’t do it all. Prioritizing tasks is the key, Dial said. “Imagine what you can accomplish by only worrying about getting three to five things done a day.”
    13. Only worry about those things YOU can control. Whatever happened is in the past. “None of us has a time machine to go back and fix something,” Dial said. “It is what it is—now what?” Asses what changed, decide who needs to know and determine what the next steps should be. “Focus on going forward, improving, changing and learning from mistakes,” Dial said.
    14. Don’t whine. Complaining without offering a potential solution is whining. No one likes whiners, so be part of the solution. “It’s ok to identify problems,” Dial said. “While it’s harder to identify solutions, that separates great leaders from the rest.”
    1. Focus on continuous improvement. Do you know as much about your profession as you expect your doctor to know about his/her profession? “Be a lifelong learner, never be satisfied, get better every day,” Dial said.

    While Dial sometimes took for granted the peace and serenity of farm life when he was growing up, he’s gained a new appreciation for small-town Iowa’s advantages. “Being back in Iowa has enabled my family to help my dad, Dwight, on the farm when we can,” Dial said. “He also comes to Ames to enjoy family time and attend Iowa State football, basketball and wrestling events with us.”

    When the Dial family gets together, they enjoy preparing some of the recipes that have been part of their family for generations. Nothing says comfort food more than this lemon pie, the signature dessert of Ethan Dial’s grandma, the late Alice Ann Dial of rural Lake City.

    CAL School Farm “Goes Green” with Gardening

    One advantage a rural school has is acres for learning. CAL’s Go Green Learning Garden was established 2017 in Latimer, Iowa, as part of the Farm to School program for elementary students.  After nine months of planning and constructing buildings, a school farm was added.

    “Our Children’s Acres for Learning, or CAL School Farm, is something that we are very proud of and our students are excited about what they can learn from the farm,” says Steve Lane, who served as superintendent of C-A-L, a public school for the communities of Coulter, Alexander and Latimer. CAL Middle School and High School became shared as part of the Hampton-Dumont School District (H-D CAL) beginning in 2018.

    Greenhouse 1The Go Green Learning Garden is comprised of five raised garden beds in which radishes, onions, tomatoes, zucchinis, peppers, potatoes and strawberries are grown. Vined plants need room to spread, so this spring CAL will till a new land garden for potatoes, tomatoes and vine plants such as zucchini, cucumbers and squash. In addition, the greenhouse has been renovated recently. The plan is to sell plants and flower arrangements in May, just in time for Mother’s Day.

    “School Board Member Cathy Carlson attended the Iowa Association of School Boards Annual Convention in November 2017 where she listened to a presentation by students from Hamburg Community School, who had begun a school farm on their property,” explains Mr. Lane. “We believed our students had the capability to construct farm buildings and be involved in operating a farm similar to Hamburg’s. We also felt that we needed to educate our students as to where their food comes from, and that a hands-on approach would be the best way for students to learn about agriculture and the food chain.”

    Mr. Dave Harms, who taught at H-D High School and also worked as a Building Trades instructor for North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), designed several farm buildings. He presented three different roof designs and each of our buildings have a different roof design. In early October 2018, Mr. Harms and Mr. Lane supervised elementary students from CAL to begin building the hog barn. It was finished just prior to Christmas break. Shortly after break, they began building the chicken coop and finished it in March.

    While the buildings were under construction, elementary students were cutting, measuring and painting the boards to create a picket fence. Elementary students also painted all of the buildings red with white trim. In April and May of 2019, the students were hard at work completing the goat barn. The goat barn is the largest of the three buildings. It was completed as school got out in June.

    ChickensChickens were added to the farm in early July 2019. The 12 pullets began laying eggs in August about the time the students started back to school. Other animals that make their home on the CAL farm include pygmy goats named Blizzard and Chip, a.k.a. Chocolate Chip, which the students named after ice cream flavors. Two pigs also were raised. The pork was processed Nov. 19, 2019, by LeWright Meats of Eagle Grove and the entire student body recently were served ham for school lunch.

    Students learn where their food comes from because it’s served on their plates and taught in both the indoor and outdoor classroom.

    Blizzard and Chip“Teachers plan lessons around what students learn at the farm in the way of Math, Reading, Science and Social Studies and even Art and Music,” says Mr. Lane. “Students sign up by the week to help with chores at 8 A.M., after lunch, and then again at 2:45 P.M. Each group consists of four or five students, who help with chores and gathering the eggs. Teachers also bring their classes to the farm when it is possible. All grades from 3-year-old pre-school to sixth grade have been learning about the farm.”
