    Football Fans “To The Rescue” on Game Day

    With 19 returning starters from last year’s Fiesta Bowl championship team and a #7 ranking in the Associated Press’ preseason poll, Iowa State University (ISU) fans are fired up for the Cyclones’ season opener on Sept. 4. Another highly anticipated game will be played Sept. 11 as part of the annual Cy-Hawk Series.

    There have been years – more years than most Cyclone fans want to admit – when the only things that got fired up on Game Day were grills. Latham Hi‑Tech Seeds’ General Manager Ryan and Meg Schon started honing their tailgating skills 25 years ago when their favorite team didn’t have a hope of post-season play, and “Tailgate Victoriously” became their rally cry.

    Among the sea of pickup trucks and campers parked near Jack Trice Stadium, you’ll find creative tailgating vehicles like converted school buses and repurposed ambulances. This year marks the fourth season that Latham® Seeds Dealer Sean Waldstein will host family members and friends for tailgates before the Cyclone football games in a converted ambulance.

    “This year is an exciting step forward for ISU football,” says Sean Waldstein, who grew up cheering for Iowa State as both of his parents are alumni.

    After graduating in 2000 from Sioux Central High School, Sean attended classes at ISU where he completed his undergrad studies in Exercise Science. He volunteered for the ISU football strength program and completed an internship at the University of Wyoming in its strength program. He went on to earn his master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Iowa State. While attending Iowa State, Sean met his wife, Amanda, who earned a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from ISU and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Drake University.

    The newly married couple made their home in Urbandale, Iowa, where Sean worked as a strength coach for Drake University and then ISU. In 2013, they moved near Lincoln, Nebraska, where Sean worked in corporate wellness and Amanda was able to stay home. In 2017, Sean and Amanda decided to raise their children near family and moved back to Sean’s hometown in Northwest Iowa. Amanda works as a Salesforce administrator / business analyst, and Sean farms with his dad. The Waldstein family grows corn and soybeans, as well as raises pigs.

    In addition, Sean works as a substitute teacher and coaches junior high girls basketball. He drives the bus mostly for the teams he coaches and helps with the school’s weight program. Sean and Amanda are the proud parents of two daughters and one son. Their oldest daughter, Ryleigh, is a freshman in high school and a four-sport athlete. Peyton is in sixth grade, and Evan is in third grade. This active family especially enjoys water sports all summer long.

    “Water skiing, barefoot, solemn and wakeboarding… you name it, we do it!” says Sean.

    Summer fun transitions into the fall tailgating season. Although Sean wasn’t looking for a tailgating vehicle, the opportunity presented itself.

    “The guy who spreads our hog manure had used the ambulance as a service vehicle, but the ambulance no longer fit his needs,” says Sean. After striking a deal for the ambulance, Sean and Amanda got to work on making it suit their needs.

    The first tailgating season they painted the outside of the ambulance and cleaned up the inside. The next season they added the 1983 and 1984 Cy logos on the outside. Most recently, a hitch was added to be able to transport a griddle.

    “One of my cousins lives in Ames, so we take the ambulance down to her place for the season. On Game Day, our family and my cousin’s family all pile into the ambulance and head to the tailgate,” says Sean. “The ambulance has made tailgating so much more enjoyable because it stores all of our equipment. We don’t have to hassle with unloading tables, chairs, a tent and grill once we get home.”

    39th Annual Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show Sets Records

    Iowans are known for banding together for a cause, and Iowans have a love affair with the Iowa State Fair. It’s no wonder the 39th Annual Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show set new records in 2021! Record-breaking crowds of fairgoers are back after the 2020 Iowa State Fair was canceled due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.

    The 39th annual Governor’s Charity Steer Show on Saturday, August 14, raised approximately $375,000 for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. The 2021 show and subsequent sale broke the previous record by about $80,000. Friends of the Franklin County Cattlemen and the Foster and Evelyn Barkema Charitable Trust now hold records for the highest-selling steer in 2020 at a price of $27,000 and the third highest-selling steer in 2021 at a price of $30,500 for Patriot.

    Patriot was the third highest-selling steer in 2021 at a price of $30,500.

    Patriot, owned by Isabella Noelck of Hampton, was selected for the Governor’s Charity Steer Show after the smoke crossbred was named Grand Champion Steer and Supreme Market Animal at the 2021 Franklin County Fair. He also competed in the Central Iowa Showdown.

    “It was amazing to be a part of the Governor’s Charity Steer Show because it helps so many families and makes such a difference in their lives,” says Noelck, who is the daughter of Is and Kristin Noelck. Isabella will be a senior at Hampton-Dumont High School. She is a class officer and a Student Council member. She also has been active in Tall Corn FFA, volleyball, golf, and St. Peters UCC youth group. In addition, she instituted a kindness campaign in the middle school.

    The youth exhibitors competing in the Governor’s Charity Steer Show are the cream of the crop. They’re used to making a difference in their communities, and they appreciate the opportunity to use their passion for showing cattle to help sick children and their families.     Franklin County’s Contribution

    The Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association in 1983 joined forces with Gov. Terry Branstad and organized the Governor’s Charity Steer Show (GCSS). At the Governor’s request, the designated charity for the first-time event was the Ronald McDonald Houses of Iowa. Houses are now located in Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City. These facilities house the family members of seriously ill children being treated in area hospitals. Since its inception, the Governor’s Charity Steer Show has generated over $4.1 million – equivalent to more than 270,000 nights stays – in support of Iowa’s Ronald McDonald House chapters. During that same time, nearly 50,000 Iowa families have been served. Additionally, another 8,000 families coming from all 50 states and more than 60 foreign countries have used the Iowa facilities.

    “The Governor’s Charity Steer Show is a great way to give to a great cause while promoting the beef industry,” says Andrew Benning, who coordinates fundraising for the steer on behalf of the Franklin County Cattlemen. “Franklin County Cattlemen really appreciate all the support from the community and from the Foster and Evelyn Barkema Charitable Trust. Everyone has been great to work with over the years.”

    Foster and Evelyn Barkema set up a trust to support both charitable and educational contributions to public health and public services. The Foster and Evelyn Barkema Charitable Trust in 2015 made its first five-year pledge to the University of Iowa Hospital. That gave Franklin County Cattlemen the idea to inquire with board members for the trust about partnering for the Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show.

    Ronald McDonald Houses and the families they support hold a special place in the heart of Dennis Vanness, who is a board member for the Foster and Evelyn Barkema Charitable Trust.

    “We had a special needs child in the 60s. He had three surgeries at Mayo Clinic. Then we had him evaluated in Iowa City. They didn’t have a Ronald McDonald House then, so we had to scramble to find a place to stay,” says Vanness. “It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that we can help make a difference for families at the Ronald McDonald House.”

    I couldn’t agree more. It is a wonderful feeling to combine your passion for doing something you love while lending others a helping hand.

    Although I had never shown a steer before, I always have wanted to show one. I spent countless hours hanging out with my friends in the cattle barns at the Butler County Fair and at the Iowa State Fair. As a 10-year 4-H member and a former Iowa State 4-H Council member, I try to live the pledge by using my hands for a larger service “for my club, my community, my country, and my world.” I am passionate about advocating for agriculture and greatly appreciate the opportunity provided by Franklin County Cattlemen, the Barkema Charitable Trust and the Noelck family to advocate in the biggest ring in this state.

    Showing livestock is definitely a family affair, and I greatly appreciate the Noelcks for welcoming me into their family on the day of the Governor’s Charity Steer Show. Today they’re sharing with us one of their favorite beef recipes.

    Latham Seeds Unveils its New Mission Statement at Annual Dealer Meeting

    Latham® Dealers from six Upper Midwest states recently gathered in Sioux Falls, SD, to kick off the start of the 2021-2022 sales year. This year’s Latham Dealer Kickoff event marks the beginning of a year-long celebration of our family-owned seed company’s 75th anniversary.

    “I’m sure my grandfather, Willard Latham, never thought about his legacy when Latham Seeds was founded on his family farm back in 1947. His business got a humble start when Grandpa literally answered a call from a neighboring farmer with an oats smut problem. It was such a widespread problem that Grandpa retrofitted a piece of equipment to clean oats, which led him to start selling certified oats seeds,” says third-generation seedsman John Latham, president of Latham Hi‑Tech Seeds.

    Today Latham Hi‑Tech Seeds sells hybrid seed corn, soybeans, alfalfa and cover crops across six Upper Midwest states. The company has continued to innovate by providing services like Data ForwardSM that helps farmers use their own data to make more informed management decisions. Data Forward can help determine whether a new piece of equipment will provide a return on investment (ROI) or whether another corn hybrid is better suited for a particular field.

During his keynote address at the Latham Dealer Kickoff event in Sioux Falls, McKain reminded us that no one stays loyal to a generic brand. “How can you differentiate yourself?     McKain certainly provided food for thought. Speaking of food… no Friday blog on “The Field Position” would be complete without a recipe! Did you know that South Dakota’s culinary heritage is a combination of indigenous peoples and the German/Russian immigrants who came to the region? Of course, its food scene is influenced heavily by the foods produced in the area like top-quality beef. Today we’re sharing with you a recipe from the South Dakota Beef Industry Council that is perfectly fitting for National Grilling Month.

    Spring Calves, Summer Camping & Milestone Celebrations

    Memorial Day Weekend marks the unofficial start of summer. Now that their four daughters have finished school for the academic year, Tyler and Michelle Sandven are kicking into high gear to make time for their favorite activities including grilling, camping and riding motorcycles.

    Oldest daughters, Sydnie and Rylie, are members of 4-H and FFA. They enjoy showing cattle and riding horses. In addition, they have summer jobs at the fitness center. Syndie is a 2021 graduate of Humboldt High School. She plans to attend Iowa Central Community College to become a medical assistant. Rylie will be a junior in high school. Twins Kylan and Kynlie will turn 10 years old at the end of this month.

    “It takes a lot of energy to keep up with four active girls! I lost 30 pounds and gained my energy and health back with the Yoli® program. After my success with the all-natural system, I became a health coach in 2018,” says Michelle, who is a licensed cosmetologist and works two days a week at the American Barbershop in Humboldt.

    The Sandvens also farm.

    “We feel fortunate to raise our family where they’re sure to develop a good work ethic,” says Tyler. “Our girls really enjoy the animals and helping with chores. When they were younger, they enjoyed riding in the cab of the tractor while the cattle are being fed. They also like helping bottle feed the calves.”

    Having a family who shares his love of agriculture makes this Iowa farmer proud.

    “Farming is all I ever wanted to do,” says Tyler, who was raised on a diversified farm in Humboldt County. After graduating from Iowa State University with a degree in Ag Business, he was eager to return to the family’s farming operation.

    Together with his dad and his brother, Tyler raises cow-calf pairs and has a feeder-to-finish cattle operation. The family also raises horses, which his father especially enjoys riding. Tyler, on the other hand, prefers to ride something with a motor. “Hanging loose in Hawaii” by riding a Harley across Maui during a Latham Seeds’ dealer trip is one of Tyler and Michelle’s favorite memories.

    “I like working with a family-owned seed business whose owners share a lot of our same values,” says Tyler, who has been a Latham® dealer since 2007. He appreciates having a solid lineup to sell of corn, soybeans and alfalfa. He encourages farmers to plant a minimum of three different Latham brand corn or soybean products with a mixture of offensive and defensive traits.     4-H Beef Project Teaches Life-Long Lessons

    Jon Suntken and Tami Pralle’s shared passion for 4-H brought them together in 1979 when they were selected to serve on the Franklin County 4-H Council. They have made their home on the Suntken’s Iowa Century Farm for 36 years.

    “All of our children began showing bucket calves at the Franklin County Fair when they turned five, and someone from our family showed bucket calves for 17 consecutive years,” says Tami. “This helped our kids develop a passion for showing and judging livestock.”

    The 2021 Franklin County Fair will mark the first time in 27 years that the Suntken family will not be showing cattle at the fair. However, their years showing cattle provided them with life-long memories and taught them important life lessons.

    “4-H has taught our children lessons and provided them with many experiences that are important in life: work ethic, responsibility, how to start and finish projects, character development, meeting new people, public speaking, helping others and developing new friendships.”

    The Suntken’s oldest daughter, Katelyn, served as both Franklin County beef princess in 2007 and beef queen in 2008. She and her husband, Ryan Borcherding, live in Reading, Pennsylvania, with their four-year-old daughter. Katelyn is a stay-at-home mom, and Ryan works for Deere & Company as a regional manager. The Suntken’s oldest son, Kellen, interned with Latham Hi‑Tech Seeds in the early years of our precision ag program. Kellen graduated from Iowa State University. He serves as Plant Operations Lead for Syngenta Seeds in Lone Tree, Iowa. He also remains active in the family’s farming operation. Their son Kendrick played linebacker for the University of Northern Iowa and now farms with his dad. Kenrick also is a chemical rep for Innvictis Crop Care and Biodyne USA. Kirsten just finished her freshman year at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) in Ankeny where she is majoring in Ag Business. This summer is serving as a precision ag intern with Latham Hi‑Tech Seeds.

    “Serving as Franklin County Beef Queen was an honor. I loved representing an industry that I am passionate about,” says Kirsten Suntken. “One highlight as Beef Queen was being part of a new cattle show in August called the North Iowa Cattle Battle. Although my time as queen wasn’t what I was expecting due to Covid-19, I learned a lot through these times. I also learned to never take anything for granted.”

    “It was an honor to be selected for the Governor’s Charity Steer Show and to raise money for a good cause,” says Kendrick Suntken. “It was also rewarding to help clean up the Ronald McDonald House in Des Moines.”

    Kellen and Kendrick Suntken had the honor of being part of the team that placed second in the 2011 Iowa State Fair 4-H livestock judging competition. From left to right are former Franklin County 4-H members: Kellen Suntken, Joe DeVries, Kendrick Suntken, and Drew Abbas. Kendrick also was the first place individual in that competition. During his career, he also placed third overall in the state FFA competition and earned High Individual at the ISU Spring Extravaganza. Kellen placed second in the individual competition for 4-H in 2011. He also was a member of the Iowa State University Livestock judging team when he was in college.

    The Sunkten’s diversified farming operation includes corn and soybeans plus a cow-calf herd and a custom hog finishing operation. Jon started farming full-time in 1979 and also worked 12 winters at Latham Seeds. He has been a contract Latham® soybean grower for 42 years. Tami works full time as a program technician at the Wright County Farm Service Agency.

    Today Tami is sharing a recipe for grape salad with an Irish twist. Kirsten is promoting Iowa beef during Beef Month by sharing with us one of her favorite recipes for pot roast in a crock pot.

    Grape Salad with an Irish Twist

    Ingredients

    • 8-ounces of Philadelphia® cream cheese (softened)
    • 1 cup brown sugar
    • 3/4 cup sour cream
    • 1/4 cup Bailey’s Irish Cream
    • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
    • 2 to 3 pounds of large, red, seedless grapes

    Directions

    • Wash grapes.
    • Cream cheese and sugars, then add other ingredients and mix all together.
    • Gently fold grapes into creamed mixture.

    When Melissa (Bisbee) Moretz was 5 years old, she went into business with her brother and sister. Their father purchased a few ewes for them to raise. They were in charge of feeding and lambing them. As they grew older, they accepted more responsibility, including the finances.

    “This is where my farming background began. It was an effort made by my parents to help my siblings and I save money for college, but it developed into much more. As we grew older and became 4-H members, we decided to sell the sheep and get into cattle and swine,” says Melissa, who served as a high school ag instructor and FFA advisor before becoming a senior portfolio manager in 2017 at a local bank. “I showed breeding beef at the county fair along with market swine at the county and state fair. I farrowed swine for my Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program in FFA. I participated in many career development events (CDE), met many people, served as a chapter officer for two years, and learned what hard work really was.”

    With so many life lessons learned, it’s no wonder that Melissa and her husband, Nate, desire to raise their family on a farm. She says she loves coming home from work and taking their children to the barn.

    “Raising our children on a livestock and grain farm has already begun to instill a strong work ethic within both of them,” says Melissa. “Having livestock gives my children an opportunity to learn about the circle of life at a very young age. They have also learned how to care for any bucket bottle calf that ends up on our farm, and they get so comfortable with them that they are more pets than cattle by the time they are weaned from the bottle.”

    Their five-year-old son is in preschool. He loves to farm any chance he gets. His two favorite things about the farm are spring calving season and riding in the planter or combine with his papa (Nate’s father).

    “This year for Kole’s class show-and-tell, we were able to do a Zoom meeting with his class. Kole shared a new calf that was born the day before our Zoom meeting. Kole explained to his class how to take care of calves and why we raise them. The class even got to name the baby. Rainbow is now happily out in our pasture with her momma.”

    The Moretz’s two-year-old daughter wants to keep up with her brother. When she isn’t chasing her brother around the farm, she helps her mom deliver meals to the field. She enjoys a good picnic in the tractor. She also loves playing outside on the swing set and going for bike rides.

    Nate and Melissa also farm with Nate’s parents, calving about 120 cows/heifers each spring. As young farmers easing their way into the operation, Nate and Melissa began to purchase market steers and heifers to finish out. Melissa says they care for each animal in the best way possible with two goals in mind: (1) keep our animals safe and healthy; and (2) produce quality offspring.

    “A special bond forms between people who are working together to accomplish a common goal,” says Melissa. “Both Nate and I were raised on farms and want to teach our children the life lessons that, in our opinion, are learned best on the farm. Responsibility, hard work, life/death, and teamwork are a few of the valuable lessons I have learned on the farm and want to share with our family.”

    In addition to raising kids, crops and cattle, the Moretz family has been Latham® seed dealers since 2015.

    “Our Latham Hi‑Tech Seed dealership has really taken off in the past couple of years. This has been a great side business for us and a supplemental income,” says Melissa. “Many customers continue to be impressed each year by the products they purchase. They show their appreciation by ordering larger volumes the next year and/or referring us to other farmers in the area. There’s nothing better than word-of-mouth advertising! We are very excited to sell for Latham and can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

    Andrew Carruth Named DSM in Northern Minnesota

    “We’ve been interested in growing our sales team in Minnesota for quite some time, so it’s super exciting to see this plan come together with the recent addition of Dan Miller in Mapleton and Andrew Carruth in Danvers,” says Amy Rohe, Latham Seeds sales manager. “Both Dan and Andrew have strong agronomic backgrounds, which really fits our organization because we want to be more than seed sellers. Our approach is to study a given field to determine which of our products best fits the soil, disease and weed challenges, as well as a farmer’s management style and lifestyle.”

    IMG 1204Andrew understands firsthand how important it is for a seed seller to understand a farmer’s crop management system and lifestyle. When he was in high school, Andrew helped milk 130 head of Holstein cows at 5 A.M. and 5 P.M. daily. He also helped his dad and uncles farm corn and soybeans. He credits his upbringing for helping him develop good listening and teamworking skills. It also gives Andrew an understanding of the important role seed selection plays in a product’s end use.

    “I’ve always spent as much time as I could helping my dad with field work and cattle,” says Andrew, who was active in both 4-H and FFA. He was on a two-person team that advanced to National FFA Convention for the Science Fair. “I’ve always wanted to farm, so I feel fortunate to have a job that allows me to do what I love.”

    Andrew enjoys spending time outdoors, walking fields with customers and working on projects. He spends as much time as he can helping his brother, Adam, and their father, Joe, farm. Andrew also enjoys spending time with his two nephews and one niece. Adam and his wife, Kelly, live nearby with their son and daughter. Andrew’s sister, Emily, lives in the Twin Cities with her husband, Robb, and their son, Leo. Andrew’s mom, Jolene, provides daycare for Peyton and Maddie. Peyton especially loves riding in the buddy seat with Uncle Andrew.

    IMG 1147It took a few years for Andrew to make his way back home, but that journey helps him appreciate the everyday moments even more.

    Because Andrew’s siblings had attended South Dakota State University (SDSU), Andrew was familiar with the campus and really enjoyed taking trips to Brookings. He graduated from SDSU in May 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in Agronomy with a minor in Soil Science. Andrew worked after college for three years as a sales agronomist for Glacial Plains Cooperative in Clontarf, Minnesota. He gained experience in everything from dispatching sprayers to writing farm plans for seed, fertilizer and chemistry. He also became a Certified Crop Advisor (CCA).

    Andrew jumped at the opportunity in 2019 to focus on only selling seed plus he it provided him with the opportunity to work from home in Danvers. His move to Latham Seeds seemed like the next logical move. As a district sales manager (DSM), Andrew will be calling primarily on Latham® seed dealers and recruiting more farmers to become seed dealers.

    IMG 1290“Anyone can show up on the farm and hand out a price sheet, so I like to add value,” says Andrew, who enjoys walking fields and sharing agronomic information. “I’m looking forward to helping Latham dealers build their business however they want. I know more farmers in this area will appreciate working with an independent, family-owned seed business. Their focus on family is one thing that drew me to Latham Seeds. Everyone in the office is so welcoming. I know the people I do business with feel comfortable doing business with Latham, too.”

    When Andrew isn’t working, he enjoys spending time at the lake. He also enjoys deer hunting and ice fishing. He recently took his girlfriend, Brittany, ice fishing for the first time and she enjoyed it. Brittany teaches pre-school. She and Andrew enjoying spending time with his nieces and nephew, as well as working on projects together.

    Andrew also appreciates a homecooked meal. Today he is sharing with us a recipe for Meatballs with Stroganoff Sauce because it’s one of favorite food that his mom makes when the family gathers. It sounds like the perfect comfort food to enjoy during a Midwest winter.

    Get Your Greek on at the Northwestern Steakhouse

    Northwestern SteakhoujseOne of the things that makes Midwestern culture and food so special is the way people maintain their culinary traditions. When in the North Iowa community of Mason City, do as the Greeks do, especially if you’re headed to the famous Northwestern Steakhouse. This casual, “come as you are” restaurant has been described as a steakhouse that hasn’t fully moved into the twenty-first century, and that’s just the way people like it.

    “We have customers whose families have come here for five generations, and we get visitors from all over the world,” said Ann Papouchis, who has run the Northwestern Steakhouse with her husband, Bill, for more than 30 years.

    The Northwestern Steakhouse features aged, USDA top choice Iowa beef cooked in extra virgin olive oil, butter and a special blend of Greek seasonings that make every bite of steak melt in your mouth, especially the 9-ounce fillet. Many of the steaks are still cut by hand.

    The Northwestern Steakhouse has been serving up a unique, savory taste of Iowa since 1920. If you’re looking for a slick, urban steakhouse with inflated prices, this isn’t it. Located on the north edge of Mason City at 304 NW 16th St. NW near middle-class neighborhoods, baseball fields and cement plants, this unassuming, locally-owned and operated restaurant has been serving working men and their families for generations.

    “This area was a melting pot a century ago,” Ann said. “There was a cement plant in this area, along with a sugar-beet processing plant, and our family’s restaurant started as a little café that fed migrant workers from the cement plants.”

    Remembering the days of 25-cent T-bone steaks

    Northwestern Steakhouse mealIn the early 1900s, Mason City had become a significant manufacturing and retail area in Iowa. The city’s lime, brick and tile businesses developed rapidly with the opening of The Northwestern State Portland Cement Plant in 1906, followed by the Lehigh Portland Cement Company in 1910. As these industries flourished, Mason City’s population steadily increased. By 1912, Mason City was producing more brick, tile and Portland cement than any city in the world, according Visit Mason City Iowa, the local convention and visitors’ bureau.

    Many immigrants from southern and eastern Europe came to Mason City to find work. Lehigh Row was housing set up for the immigrant workers on the grounds of the cement company and White City was the Northwestern plant’s row houses for the workers.

    While the forerunner of the Northwestern Steakhouse opened in 1920, owners Pete Maduras and Tony Papouchis moved the business (known as Pete’s Place in those days) in 1932 to a little building on North Federal Avenue in Mason City. T-bone steaks cost a whopping 25 cents, and liquor was bootlegged out of the basement. In 1954 the pair moved Pete’s Place to its present location on 16th Street NW. Pete and Tony continued their partnership, with Pete being waiter/businessman and Tony was the cook/gardener. They had a large garden with more than 200 tomato plants, 50 green pepper plants and many other vegetables.

    By 1965, Pete wanted to retire and sold the business to Tony. It was at that time the name changed to the Northwestern Steakhouse. Tony continued to plant his garden every year, harvesting fresh vegetables each summer to use in the restaurant. All of his customers looked forward to Tony’s fresh “salatas,” along with his special Greek menu on Sundays.

    Tony was still cooking at his beloved Northwestern Steakhouse at age 96. In an interview with the local newspaper, he said he continued to work because he liked it. “Better to be working,” said Tony, who worked 365 days a year and passed away at age 98.

    Cheers to 101 years

    Today, the Northwestern Steakhouse is operated by Tony’s son, Bill, and Bill’s wife, Ann, who keep a portrait of Tony hanging on the wall behind the cash register.

    The straightforward menu showcases the finest beef in Iowa, all prepared in olive oil and doused with an incredible blend of Greek seasonings and top-secret ingredients. As the menu notes, “Not responsible for steaks ordered medium well or well done. Please order accordingly.”

    Meals are served with an array of options, including spaghetti topped with olive oil, Greek seasonings and parmesan cheese, along with Greek salads.

    The restaurant is still known for its friendly atmosphere and unforgettable food. Perhaps no one knows this better than the Northwestern Steakhouse’s long-time customers like Neil Pogeler from Florida, whose story was recorded on the restaurant’s website.

    “I remember my dad bragging about this place to everyone he met for years after he left Mason City. Now that he’s gone, it’s my turn to brag about it,” said the Mason City native, who has been a customer of the Northwestern Steakhouse for more than 50 years. “I can even tell you the taste is exactly the same as it was back then. (You never forget a certain taste or smell.) Kudos to you, and may your restaurant live on forever!”

    But then came the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, which created big challenges for all restaurants, including the Northwestern Steakhouse.

    “We thought we would be celebrating our 100-year anniversary in a different way at the beginning of this year, but it sure has been an anniversary to remember,” noted a post on the Northwestern Steakhouse’s Facebook page on December 31, 2020. “It hasn’t always been easy this year. For the first time in decades, we had to close entirely for a brief time. Then we had to learn a brand-new way of serving you with curbside pickup.

    There have been some really great moments, too — being awarded the Key to the City by our Mason City mayor, being named one of Iowa’s 7 best steakhouses by Big 7 Travel, and of course being able to say we made it through 100 years!

    As we reflect on 2020, what we think of the most is your continuous support through it all. Your support and love reminded us why we do what we do. We are extremely grateful to the community we’ve called home for 100 years. Cheers to 101 years!”

    Use Cookie Cutters for Dough, Not Crops

    2Anyone involved in agriculture knows that no two years are exactly alike. No farm is the same, and each farmer has his or her preferred way of doing things. That’s why Eric Croghan (rhymes with “prawn”) doesn’t believe in taking a cookie-cutter approach to crop planning.

    “What I enjoy the most about serving as a regional sales manager (RSM) for Latham Hi‑Tech Seeds is working with others as part of a team where everyone buys into the task at hand,” says Croghan, who played three sports in high school. “I love meeting people and learning how and why they do things. When I help farmers, it’s rewarding.”

    After majoring in Ag Business and minoring in Agronomy, Croghan graduated in 3.5 years from Iowa State University. He says he was eager to hit the ground running. He differentiated himself as a young salesman by earning his CCA (certified crop advisor) certification. Then he accepted a position as a sales agronomist for a local co-op. He says the seven years he spent selling seed, chemical and fertilizer was extremely valuable as it gave him well-rounded knowledge that he uses today to help farmers.

    “Latham Seeds is about helping farmers. The company began in 1947 when Willard Latham found a way to help neighboring farmers save their oats crop from smut. Then he began selling certified oats seed,” says Eric. “Willard and his wife, Evelyn, ran the seed business out of their house and treated every customer like family. Evelyn was known for her hospitality, and her legacy lives on today. The fact that Latham is family-owned company is a big plus. When you plant Latham® seed, you know a family is putting its reputation on the line as is the person who recommended the product to you. It’s a responsibility we take seriously.”

    4Eric learned the value of hard work by growing up on his family’s farm outside Manilla. The youngest of four, he and his older two sisters and brother helped their parents raise corn, soybeans, alfalfa and run a cow-calf herd. In addition to playing sports, Eric worked part time at the local hardware store.

    His free time is still spent working on the family farm. He also has his own cow-calf herd. He raises Black Angus/Simmental cross cattle. He started in 2017 with a few bred heifers from his father’s herd. Each year Eric focuses on raising better cattle instead of just getting bigger. This way he can grow the herd without stretching his resources too thin.

    “I love raising and caring for livestock because it brings up a different set of challenges and offers a lot of great rewards,” says Eric. “I am pretty excited to pass down some of the same childhood experiences that I had to my kids.”

    Eric and his wife, Amber, are the proud parents of a two-year-old daughter named Jade. They’re eagerly awaiting the arrival of their second child this spring. Amber is a registered nurse health coach at the Manning Regional Health Care Center. Amber is part of every farm decision like when to sell calves. She also raised a large garden and 200 broilers for family and friends.

    1When Eric and Amber aren’t working, they enjoy spending time with family. This winter they have been enjoying sledding with their daughter on their acreage. Amber and Eric feel blessed to have purchased an acreage on the Ehlers family’s Iowa Century Farm from Amber’s aunt and uncle.

    “This farm has been in the family for more than 100 years, and now we’re responsible for caring for it. It really makes you aware of the legacy left behind, as well as the one you’re leaving,” says Eric. “We found an old seed dealership sign from when Amber’s Grandpa Ray was a seed dealer for another company. I hung it next to my Latham sign. It hit home… Different farmers with different farming practices on the same ground with the same goal of leaving their own legacy.”

    Farmers feel a great deal of responsibility to steward the land. They also take pride in the products they raise. To help promote beef, today the Croghan family is sharing with us one of their favorite recipes for Porcupine Meat Balls.
