Contact Crop Insurance Agent Regarding Late Harvest

Agri-View recently posted an article that’s very important for farmers to read as this challenging harvest continues. With the weather causing a late, slow-progressing harvest, the article highlights the importance of contacting your crop insurance agent if you won’t be able to complete harvest by early December.

Purdue University economist Bill Edwards is quoted in the article, saying the crop insurance deadline for corn and soybeans in Midwest states is Dec. 10. “However, producers may request additional time to complete harvest. Insurance companies may grant an extension when timely notice is given to the agent and the delay is due to an insured cause, such as wet weather or snowfall.” For more information, please read the article.

    Summer Picnics

There’s nothing better than a summer picnic! I love being outdoors, enjoying beautiful weather and the company of family and friends. I especially enjoy listening to bullfrogs croaking, birds singing and kids giggling?or shrieking with delight as they chase one another with water balloons and squirt guns.

I also think summer picnics are a good opportunity to branch out from the standards: fresh fruit, potato salad and baked beans. I wanted to make use of fresh vegetables from our garden, too. So this weekend I served something new that was a real hit with my family and friends.

Planting is underway… but the gardeners begin harvest!

Planting season is well underway for most farmers, but those of us who enjoy gardening are about to begin harvesting—rhubarb, that is. Rhubarb is one of the first garden offerings to ripen, so this recipe from Latham Hi‑Tech Seeds own Joy Bonin is just in time to enjoy the first “tastes” of spring. We’d love for you to share your own favorite rhubarb recipes.  Leave them for us in the comment box below!

FUN FACT: Rhubarb is officially a vegetable because it is the red stalk that is eaten.

    April is Soy Foods Month

April is Soy Foods Month, so we’re featuring soy menu items on our blog. All of them have been taste-tested by yours truly. In fact, I liked the Crisp Summer Salad so much that I’m planning to make it for our family’s Easter dinner. It’s certain to be a conversation piece!

The tofu-stuffed pasta shells, edamame and corn salad and chai soy latte all earned rave reviews last week at the 2009 Iowa Soy Day on the Hill. One goal of our March 31 visit to the Iowa Statehouse was to showcase the variety and value of soy products, as well as the value of services offered by the Iowa Soybean Association. In addition, the Day on the Hill highlighted the 45th anniversary of the Iowa Soybean Association.

Here is the recipe for Crisp Summer Salad from our Soy Menu, courtesy of the Soyfoods Council.

    Soups that warm the heart

These recipes were submitted by one of our Latham dealers in Everly, Iowa. Every Christmas Eve, their family has soup night.  Here are a couple of their favorite soup recipes. Perfect on these cold winter nights.

    Potato Cheese Soup

    Ingredients:

    • 6-8 potatoes, peeled and cubed
    • 2-3 carrots, sliced
    • 1-2 celery stalks, sliced
    • 1 small onion, chopped
    • 1 pkg. (8oz.) cream cheese, softened
    • 1/4 c. butter, softened
    • 1 can (10 and 3/4 oz.) condensed cream of chicken soup
    • 2 c. milk
    • salt and pepper to taste
    • crumbled bacon
    • green onion, diced
    • shredded cheddar cheese

    Directions:

    1. Place potatoes, carrots, celery, and onion in large kettle, cover with water.
    2. Cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
    3. Meanwhile, in mixing bowl combine softened cream cheese, butter, and cream of chicken soup. Combine until smooth.
    4. Gradually add milk, salt and pepper.
    5. Before adding to vegetables, drain most of the water from kettle, depending how thick you prefer the soup.
    6. Add creamed mixture to the kettle and heat slowly.
    7. Before serving, I sprinkle each bowl with a little bacon, green onion and cheddar cheese.
