CENTRAL IOWA “FROM THE FIELD®” CROP REPORT 09/28/2016
Harvest has started in Central Iowa after more rain rolled through over the weekend. Depending on location, farmers received from one to four inches.
I encourage farmers to start on corn if beans are not ready. As mentioned in my last report, stalk rot is becoming an issue. We have been able to see a large difference in talk quality across different hybrids. This could also be an issue in the future where there has been standing water. It is a good idea to scout your fields to look for potential signs of stalk quality issues to determine your harvest order.
Lodging continues to complicate corn harvest and can lead to yield loss and storage issues. High winds, stalk cannibalization and stalk rots are all factors contributing to ear drooping and stalk lodging in corn.
Have a safe and happy harvest!
