Latham will sell seed in 140,000 seed units instead of 50 pound units. 

This innovative marketing program is installed at the request of producers, and makes sense for many reasons.  Seed size is impacted by the growing season and varies from lot to lot, yet modern soybean planters are now capable of planting a desired seed count per acre.  In the past, growers could only guess the number of bags needed when ordering and often ordered more than needed.

Growers may now order a nearly exact count of seed for a particular field, regardless of seed size.  In addition, Latham can now more closely ship the customer’s exact needs and pass this efficiency on to the customer.  Returns will be reduced as a result.

140,000 seeds is the recommended planting rate for treated, high-quality seed in 30 inch rows under optimum conditions.  Higher rates are recommended for narrow rows, early and late planting dates, rough or no-till conditions, and other factors (see Latham Soybean Planting Recommendations).  In addition, 140,000 seeds allow a savings in herbicide technology costs.

Why change to seed count?  Accuracy, savings, and convenience!

• Soybean seed cost/acre is now approaching that of corn.  Higher costs make accuracy, efficiency, and waste reduction far more important.
• Seed and herbicide trait costs are now combined into the single price of soybean seed, resulting in this higher price per acre.  Future traits may further push this trend. 
• New accurate planters are now planting a high percentage of soybean acreage.
• Seed count sales allow for a slight savings in the herbicide trait cost component.
• Under this program, growers may now order seed without needing to know the exact seed size.
• Also, growers may now figure their exact cost per acre at the time of order, and it will not change upon seed delivery.
• Returns and additional seed deliveries will likely be reduced.

How will Latham soybean seed by shipped?

• A sales unit will now be 140,000 seeds instead of 50 pounds.
• All prices, planting rate recommendations, discounts, and incentives will now apply to 140,000 seed units. 
• Seed bags will now each contain 140,000 seeds.  Using 4 year averages, we expect 140,000 seed bag sizes to range from approximately 40 pounds to 55 pounds. 
• Minibulk bags will have 40 units in each bag. The weight of the bag will adjust for smaller seed.
• Growers may now order the exact amount of seed needed.
